Apothecaries index | |
Index to the book 'A list of Persons who have obtained Certificates of their fitness and qualifications to practise as apothecaries from August 1 1815 to July 31 1840' published in 1840 and held in the Society's library (PR/MED)
Anyone who was already practicing as an apothecary on the first of August 1815 will not appear in this list. Apothecaries who are listed had to be 21 years or over and have served an apprenticeship of five years or more. The date given against their name is the date on which the person obtained their certificate of qualification to practice as an apothecary. From August 1820 candidates were required to give their address at the time of their examination by the Society of Apothecaries. Those whose names are marked by a star could practice anywhere in England and Wales including London. No attempt was made to check whether any of these men had died by the closing date of 31 July 1840. During the checking process many of these apothecaries were traced on the 1841 census. The occupations of virtually all were given as 'surgeon'.
