 Boyds Inhabitants of London
Boyds Inhabitants of London is a collection of 237 volumes containing 60,000 handwritten sheets that give the details of nearly half a million Londoners. The vast majority of entries (96%) are from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It was formerly known as Boyds Citizens of London but was changed to Inhabitants of London since not all of the people listed are citizens in the strict sense (ie. Freemen of the city).

A sheet typically shows, as a minimum, the name of the man, the parish where he lived in London, and the date of his marriage. However many sheets show far more information, as they contain space for the following:

o the mans name and place of residence.
o the names and origins of his parents and maternal grandparents.
o dates and places of his birth, marriage, death and burial.
o details of his wife - her name, origin, parentage and dates and places of birth and death.
o his education, profession, livery company and his will.
o his children and their dates of birth, marriage and death and names of their spouses.

Because Boyd used a phonetic system to deal with variant surnames, this index lists both the spelling in the original document and Boyds standardized spelling.
Some sheets have additional notes on the facing page (back of the previous sheet) so it is worth checking the images either side by clicking on the < and > buttons above the thumbnail

At the foot of the page, there are often references (usually abbreviated) to the sources of information from which the family has been reconstructed. The books referred to are all in the Society of Genealogists Library, and frequently contain Boyds marginalia.
